Our Caregiver of The Month: Donna Backman

The role of a caregiver is never easily explained as it can involve so many dynamics in caring for others. This year with the pandemic affecting every aspect of our lives, the dynamics of care giving have been affected as well. There is a caregiver at Charter Senior Living in Hermitage who has gone above the expectations of her daily duties and given so much more to the residents there. Her job title doesn't even insinuate that she is a caregiver, but her actions show otherwise. She regularly checks on the residents in the villas at Charter, brings them snacks, keeps them updated on events and has helped in making sure they have not felt completely isolated during the restrictions caused by the virus. She has organized Facebook Live music concerts for them to watch safely at home, drive-thru mask pick-ups with lunches and helpful resource information, cooking classes with their chef to make something new while stuck at home, and all this while marketing for her day job! One of the best examples was on her wedding anniversary, she and her husband spent their night delivering a delicious Italian dinner to every resident in the villas in a decorated golf cart and shared a toast and bubbles with them all! Please join me in congratulating Donna Backman as our Caregiver of the month! Do you know a caregiver that is amazing? Nominate them today: www.afamilylegacy.com/caregivers/

We are so thankful for the many amazing caregivers in the middle Tennessee area. We recently received a nomination for a social worker from Highpoint Hospice, Rachel Sircy. Rachel is very caring and devoted to her "many" roles at Highpoint Hospice. She takes on difficult patient situations as an MSW (Master of Social Work) and provides the patients and families with a calming presence. As the volunteer coordinator, she leads a team of compassionate, dedicated volunteers and has led our team to WHV (We Honor Veterans) program level four. This program has thrived under her leadership and has touched many deserving veterans. Rachel exhibits the best in teamwork, ALWAYS going above and beyond. Congratulations Rachel Sircy! Nominated by Cheri Wood.

Our Caregiver of the Month: Dee Wigger

We are happy to announce a caregiver of the month recipient for 2020. Even though we have been unable to see a lot of the caregivers due to the virus, they have still been working hard taking care of so many this year! Dee Wigger of Caris Healthcare is an exceptional nurse. She is very thorough and detailed and loves her patients dearly. She is always willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. She is always willing to help out her patients and families as well as her coworkers. She personally cared for one of my loved ones and did it well. She is very in tuned to what symptom management is needed and always acts quickly to keep our patients comfortable and our families informed. Congratulations Dee Wigger!

Our current caregiver being recognized was nominated by a business that Alive Hospice partners with and her peers as well! The partner wrote that they were not only impressed with the way she treated them but mostly the way she treats families. They stated that she goes above and beyond to help out whether it's at a house or whether it's at a facility, it's just like she was meant for the job! Her peers added that she is an integral part of the team. "She is one of the hardest working people I've had the pleasure of meeting. She has a heart of gold and exudes compassion with each patient/family she encounters. She is the epitome of teamwork and jumps in any chance she can to help ensure our patients get everything they need." Congratulations Angie Warfield! Thank you to TJ Tewmey of Family Legacy and Ashley Kowalski of Alive Hospice.

Our Caregiver of the Month: Diane Clark

Our staff is always amazed by the stories of the wonderful caregivers and this one is no different. Help us with congratulating Diane Clark of Avalon Hospice! I wanted to let you know just how wonderful Diane was and how very much she helped my Mother, my husband and myself during my Mom's passing. Diane sat me down and explained Mom's current condition and what she was doing to ease Mom's passing to minimize her pain and suffering. This also helped to put me more at ease. She has an excellent gift of sensing the needs of those she is interacting with. We both talked about our families which turned our rather amusing at times. We discovered that no matter where you come from and regardless of your background, a lot of families share the same situations and experiences. Diane's presence and professional down-to-earth demeanor were very instrumental in easing not only my Mother's pain and suffering but ours as well. We feel blessed to have had Diane attend to our Mom during this trying time. Her obvious dedication to her job and profession should be commended. - Nominated by Sandra Davis

Our most recent recipient of the Caregiver Award is Pennie Brooks from Alive Hospice. Once you read her nomination, I am sure you will agree she represents what the spirit of a caregiver should be! As a new employee at Alive, I had the chance to shadow Pennie Brooks as she made the rounds to see patients. It was an awe-inspiring and humbling experience as I saw Pennie treat every bedside as a sacred space. She said, "If people allow us in, we can help make a death as beautiful as a birth." Her warm, loving spirit comes across to all the families she sees. Even if the patient does not have consciousness, her care is reverent, patient, and giving. Pennie deserves all the appreciation and accolades we can bestow. - Nominated by Paige Bainbridge From L to R: Christopher Taylor, Dr. Anh Meadows - Senior Director of Medical Services, Pennie Brooks and Michell Price

Coping with Grief During the Holidays

While holiday jingles may attest to this being "the most wonderful" time of year, we know that's not the case for everyone. At Family Legacy, we understand how difficult this time of year can be for those families who have experienced loss. We are committed to helping you through it. Family Legacy offers many grief resources. If you need someone to talk to, call or come by any of our locations. Our staff of friendly, experienced professionals can provide helpful literature or refer you to peer support groups and grief counselors within our community. In addition, here are a few strategies that you might consider to help you cope with grief during the holidays: Take Care of Yourself It's important to make time for yourself, focus on rest and not taking on any more than you can handle during this time. Schedule time to do something your enjoy, perhaps time for a certain hobby or a trip to the movies, for example. Look for Support Share your feelings with friends and family, it can be a source of support during this time. If you do not have local family or friends to reach out to, consider looking for a local support group. Contact us, we can help connect you with a group. Honor the Memories Create a special way to honor your loved one. Perhaps it is as simple as lighting a candle each day or eating a dish of their favorite food. Honoring the memories is proof that love never dies. We wish you a blessed holiday.

Anyone who has the chance to meet this caregiver will tell you he truly has a servant's heart for family, friends and anyone he can help. We were thankful this family took the time to let us know and congratulate Mr. Wavell Stewart! Wavell Stewart, age 76, is the Senior Minister at the Crieve Hall Church of Christ where Dad (Tom Holland 1931-2019) was the pulpit minister for many years. Since Dad was confined to a wheelchair with his spinal stenosis, Wavell would drive to NHC Place Cool Springs every Sunday morning to pick him up for church services. After services, Wavell would join Dad for lunch and always have kind words for the other NHC residents. Wavell also drove Dad to speaking engagements out of town regularly. Wavell even arranged for Dad's funeral to be held on a Sunday at Crieve Hall. Wavell has a wonderful, giving heart and extended Dad's life by enabling him to do the activities he so loved. - Nominated by Lisa Holland Harless

Most people realize the title of Nurse is one that has required years of schooling, practice and patience, but one of the key factors that make up a great nurse cannot always be taught; caring. Terri Dixon of Caris Hospice was nominated by a family she served for the amazing care she provided from the medical books and from the heart! The family wrote, "Terri was very attentive both at our house and the two nursing homes my husband was in. She also prepared us for the end. Then she attended his memorial service." These things can sound small when written in a sentence, but the impact for this family will be remembered forever. Thank you, Terri, for all that you do!

Funerals Are for the Living

A very important fact is that funerals are very much for the living. A funeral plays a very important role in the grieving process and allows an opportunity for family and friends to say goodbyes. Family and friends can receive support from one another, an important part of helping people cope with a loss. When a loved one passes, the funeral is about them, not for them. The funeral ceremony is for all family, friends and others connected in some way to the person. Overcoming the pain of a loss is never easy but a meaningful funeral service will help. At Family Legacy, we believe a funeral isn't simply a time to mourn. It's also an opportunity to celebrate your loved one's unique life. That's why our professional staff specializes in creating meaningful personal tributes to reflect each unique life lived. Our Life Celebrations are created in conjunction with funerals, as well as other customized ceremonies. Our upbeat services allow you to tell your loved one's story and honor their one-of-a-kind life.

We are excited to award an amazing caregiver from Caris Hospice this month! Her name is Amy Walker and she definitely takes the time to go out of her way to make families feel at ease with not only their loved one's transition to death, but also in the steps that follow. She explains the process and what they can expect to happen when the funeral home arrives. It means so much because Amy has gotten to the know the family and developed a level of trust so that when our staff arrives to pick up their loved one, there is a sense of calm and understanding thanks to her preparation. We know her heart is big as we witness the emotions she feels along with the family. Amy has been described as a kind, generous person who loves her family, is a great grandparent, and would bend over backwards to help not only her patients, but her family and co-workers too! Congratulations Amy! - Nominated by TJ Tewmey

Congratulations to our Caregiver of the Month, Deshay Biggerstaff. Deshay Biggerstaff of Alive Hospice has helped countless families in her role as a hospice nurse and always provides excellent care. Even her own coworkers describe her as fabulous! Part of the reason she was nominated for this award is because of the relationships and trust she builds with each family. It is obvious to the staff at Family Legacy when we arrive to pick up their loved one that the family has been fully prepared for the next steps. They seem more at ease with our arrival and accepting to trust us with the care of their loved one thanks to her preparation. And the heartache we have seen her experience right along with the family shows why she is able to do this job with so much caring. Thank you Deshay for making a difference for these families and even starting our relationship with them off on a good note as well! - Nominated by TJ Tewmey L to R: Brian Blumenberg-Family Legacy, Deshay Biggerstaff-Alive Hospice, TJ Tewmey-Family Legacy

I grew up in Hendersonville, TN, and I am the son of the late Dee and Bobby T. Upton. I attended Beech High School followed by Tennessee Technological University and Western Kentucky University where I majored in Horticulture and Turfgrass Management. After Western, I joined the United States Marine Corps where I was stationed out of Twenty-Nine Palms, CA with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. Upon completion of my commitment, I received an Honorable Discharge. My wife Elizabeth and I have a daughter named Isabella and have lived in the Bellevue area since my return from the Marine Corps. I enjoy time with my family, playing golf, and spending time with my friends at Saint Henry Church and Post 1970 of the VFW. My faith in God and my love of Christ are the backbone for family and work. Personal Philosophy: Making funeral, cremation, or cemetery decisions does not have to be a difficult process. The advance planning process allows you to express your wishes and relieve your loved ones of this future emotional and financial burden. One of the greatest gifts we can give our family is a well thought out plan that eliminates any lingering doubts about the decisions that are not made allowing for a true celebration of life.

Our Caregiver of the Month: Kaleigh Sabin

We at Family Legacy are excited to share another story of an amazing caregiver with you! Her name is Kaleigh Sabin and she is a nurse at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. Read the words submitted by the family below and you will see what a difference she made in their lives. Kaleigh is a nurse, but more than that, she became a part of our family. This wonderful lady, nurse, and angel cared for Joe Leath in such a way we were so, so happy to see someone care. You see, Joe went in the hospital December 24, 2018, in Gallatin, TN. Then he went to Life Care Center in Old Hickory and finally to Centennial. Kaleigh was the first nurse in our journey who cared, loved us, and loved Joe. Every day she would check on us and him even when Joe wasn't her patient that day. She would stay after her shift ended to be with us and Joe. She was as much support for us as she was for Joe. When Brother Chuck said a final prayer, she was there; holding us, crying with us, and loving us. She is one of a kind! Submitted by Peggy Leath Do you know a Caregiver?
Our Caregiver of the Month: Samantha Carnduff

It's not every day that you come across someone so kind that they are referred to as an angel, but Family Legacy is proud to present our latest Caregiver of the Month who has been given that title. Congratulations to Samantha Carnduff of Guardian Hospice! An Angel: From August - November 7, 2018, she guided Mom and our family gently along. Her words were kind, gentle and soft. She wore a smile that was contagious each time she walked in the door. My Mom looked forward to her coming and believed in her. She was there for us throughout the ups and downs of the situation until the end. Always willing with advice and love no matter the time. She came in the door November 7, 2018, 3:45 pm. I will always believe Mom waited on her to take her last breath, for she knew Samantha would guide her to the other side peacefully and she did, still with that smile and arms to hold me as Mom left at 4:05pm. I have never met a person who meets the qualifications of an angel, but will forever hold a special place for her, for she is all that! Submitted by Ann Johnson Do you know a Caregiver?

Family Legacy has the privilege of meeting so many amazing people who take the time and care to make a difference in the lives of others. As you will see from this month's story, Michael Harrison is one of those people who provides these things and more as a nurse with NHC Sumner in Gallatin. While my husband was a patient at NHC Sumner in late summer of 2018, there was an RN, Michael Harrison, who provided exceptional care to both the patient and his family. The careful attention to making sure pain relief was given promptly and the respect he showed for the personal needs for both patient and family was above and beyond our expectations. He never showed any impatience or frustration when the care was difficult. He continued his respect and caring when he came and gave condolences to the family at the funeral and visitation. Michael should be recognized as a special member of the health care team. Nominated by Martha Wallace (surviving spouse of Frank E.
Family Legacy is always thankful for the caregivers we are lucky enough to meet and hear all about. Our latest Caregiver of the Month is touching many lives in many ways and we are so happy to share the story of Julie Crawford, from Aseracare Hospice, with you! Julie Crawford does so many amazing things it is hard to know where to begin. She is the type to drop everything she is doing, forget about her own plans, and give all she has to her patients. There is no doubt about how much she cares and it comes across in one conversation about her "calling" in life. Julie cares about those she helps through her job, but has also been known to assist Veterans with a true passion and understanding for what they have sacrificed as well. She not only cares about end of life care but also helps the families of her patients and directs them through their next steps with love. Thank you Julie, for the compassion and care you show so many every day! Do you know a Caregiver? Nominate them today!

Family Legacy recognizes that the role of caregiver can mean so much more than just medical attention. Anne Christian, of Creekside Center for Rehabilitation & Healing, is a true example of this idea and what it can mean to a family. My mother, Bev King, was in this facility for 2 ½ years, with progressing Dementia. Anne was there most of this time. She is such a giving and caring person, I wish she could be recognized for this. I have no spouse or family in the TN area, only my adult son. Trying to understand and cope with Mom's disease was so over whelming and there were many times when I felt very alone and helpless. Anne recognized the fact that the families often needed more than the residents. Anne gave me the strength I needed to be strong for my Mom. Anne mainly worked the front desk but she was the best "caregiver" there. Submitted by Nancy Woodring Do you know a Caregiver? Nominate them today!

We are happy to share the story of another amazing caregiver who has helped so many families over the years as a nurse and continues to do so as a volunteer with Willowbrook Hospice. Congratulations to our Caregiver of the Month, Laura Barnes. Laura Barnes is a volunteer with Willowbrook Hospice after having served as a nurse for many years in different capacities. She has served as a volunteer with Willowbrook on two different occasions and does excellent work because she loves her patients and has a huge heart to help them during their time of greatest need. Laura also gives her all to the family, doing whatever is needed to help them, knowing that they are tired and exhausted from serving as caregivers for their loved ones during end-of-life situations. Laura always gets lots of accolades from the families because she loves on the patients and families and they need that during this time more than ever! Congratulations Amanda Jones Rogers for making a difference in the lives of so many and being recognized as our Caregiver of the Month! Amanda was Richard Kirkpatrick's hospice nurse for a very short time, but within that time she gave exceptionally tender and loving care to him. Any time she was called with questions/concerns from family members, she was helpful and consoling. On the day of death, she was called to come to attend to him. She took careful attention to his vital signs and physical health as far as appearances and struggles. After two hours, she gave the family her clinical findings. We were very thankful for her truthful expertise and she was right on correct. Thank you, Amanda! Submitted by Connie Fulghum for Sara Kirkpatrick Do you know a Caregiver?
Family Legacy has another amazing story to share about a truly wonderful caregiver in our community. Please join us in congratulating Kandi Richie of Avalon Hospice for being chosen as Caregiver of the Month! Kandi Richie is a RN Case manager at Avalon Hospice. Kandi takes pride in caring for her patients and families. Kandi has so much compassion and love towards caring for others. When Kandi goes into a home she sits and listens to every patient and family member's needs and displays love and affection but also time. For example, Kandi went into a home when a patient was passing and provided loving care to the patient by talking to the patient softly and making sure she had enough medication for comfort. She displayed love and affection towards the family and stayed with the patient until they had passed. She always answers questions and makes sure her patients are comfortable and never rushes from a home and takes her time with each patient and family. Through her appreciation, patients and family members always try to give Kandi items such as fruit, vegetables and other sweets for her compassion. Kandi always has a smile on her face and makes patients and family members feel good no matter how her day is, and believe me, she has some rough days. This is why I want to nominate Kandi Richie.

We can't say enough about the recipient of our most recent caregiver award. Her story below will shed some light on the amazing person known as JoAnn, but seen as so much more to all of those lucky enough to come into contact with her. I met Jo Ann while she was caring for her mother as she lived in a nursing home. She would go to the nursing home almost every day, sit with her mother who could not move or speak and spend hours talking to her and loving on her and the staff. She would bring thoughtful gifts to the staff, such as ornaments at Christmas or donuts for breakfast. An example is bananas, with words written on them in Sharpie, such as, "You are so a-PEEL-ing!!!!" Jo Ann loved on the staff and they loved on her mother. Jo Ann would decorate the walls in her mother's room different each month, depending on the season, the holiday, and if something significant happened in her mother's life during that month. This way anyone who walked in could carry on a conversation with her mother by just looking at the walls. Jo Ann also attended and still attends and helps out with the Support Group at the nursing home where her mother lived. She is a great graphic artist and does calligraphy and puts up the fliers on Sunday Visitation Day and attends the meetings and encourages and participates fully, helping others in the same situation that she is in.
Our Caregiver of the Month: Marketta Crutcher

Family Legacy is proud to share our most recent Caregiver of the Month and the special kind of person that she truly is...take a moment to read her nomination submitted by her peers at Guardian Hospice and we think you will agree! We would like to nominate Marketta Crutcher, for Caregiver of the Month. Marketta has been a part of the Guardian Hospice family since December 2016. As a Hospice Aide, Marketta has always displayed an exemplary work ethic, going above and beyond to serve our patients and their families with compassion, respect and dignity. We would like to share an example of her extraordinary kindness and generosity. We had a patient who had a large family that was of little support to their dying loved one. Marketta took care of him several days a week, going above and beyond by doing his grocery shopping, laundry and even helping him write letters to his son in prison. The patient was discharged from hospice to the hospital and then went to a nursing home to receive skilled care. She continues to see him on a regular basis due to the friendship they developed, while he was under the care of Guardian Hospice. She is still available for him to call when he needs something because his family seldom visits. The patient has told her that she is more like family to him than any of his 5 children. We have been very blessed to work with Marketta and feel that she is a bright shining light to our families and patients offering them hope and comfort during a very challenging season of their life.
It is easy to see why Family Legacy was able to proudly award Caregiver of the Month to Wanda Taylor of TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center. Read the story below submitted by a family who was truly touched by her compassion. Wanda was not only a true professional but a wonderful person to the core. Her compassion for her fellow human by far surpasses any title on her badge. When our loved one became critical she was on the spot not only with a solution but with compassion and care for him and his wife. Wanda went above and beyond to care for the family as well through either food, details on procedures and even a gentle shoulder to cry on. When our loved one passed she came to the visitation and comforted the family. Wanda is not only a nurse but a true gift of the Lord. Submitted by Dorothy Allen

After one visit to her home where she won't let you leave without her home made fudge, it is easy to see the story below is true and that love that flows from our Caregiver of the Month, Gloria Johnson. This caregiver embodies the full meaning of caring for someone else - and she does it with such an amazing attitude. Gloria Johnson takes care of her husband, Iliff Johnson - who has Alzheimer's disease. She is his cook, physical therapist, nurse, maid, chauffeur, friend, encourager, prayer warrior, his hands, and his voice. This horrible disease has taken so much away from her husband but instead of focusing on the loss, she focuses on what she has. Each day when I speak with her - it is the best day of her life - her disposition is always upbeat. She is patient and kind. She has her own aches and pains but will never complain about herself. She always has something positive to offer. Anyone that knows her will tell you they are a better person for knowing Gloria Johnson. After spending time with her, you feel her love because she is always giving it away. She also has a heart for homeless people and gives blankets, food or whatever she can. Gloria is 83 years young. My grandmother use to say, "pretty is as pretty does" - Gloria is a beautiful person - inside and out!
Family Legacy is pleased to share the story of another amazing caregiver, Donna McDade of Always Best Care. Donna was nominated by a family that she worked with but one trip to her office and you will hear that her giving and caring ways are appreciated by many more. Congratulations Donna! Donna is a kind-hearted, genuine, spirit filled individual. She goes above and beyond the call of duty. For example, she changed her work hours from 2-10 pm so we could go to my niece's dance recital. She never left my dad's side except to get things he needed. She talked with him, listened to him and prayed for him. She is one of God's earthbound angels and she was a God-send to our family.
Our Caregivers of the Month: Janine & Kyle Scott

Family Legacy is so honored to share the story of our recent Caregivers of the Month, Kyle and Janine Scott. This couple went much farther in their relationship than families often do and made such a difference in the life of their loved one. "I am nominating my sister and brother in law. They selflessly took care of our father for the last 7 and a half years of his life. They got him to all of his doctor appointments. Gave him his medicines. Hired sitters to come in and give him a bath every day. They cooked every meal for him that he ate. They spoiled him. He was in a wheelchair and had very little use of his legs at all. They did whatever was necessary to make him comfortable. He had many health issues. He had heart problems and had a pace maker. He had lung cancer years ago and only had one lung so he required oxygen 24/7. He had COPD. He couldn't walk. He often got pneumonia from aspirating so they had to cut his food up in tiny pieces. It was a full time job and then some. They at times gave up financial opportunities to take care of dad. My husband works out of town and I work 30 plus hours a week and had 3 kids at home so I wasn't able to help very much. My kids and I would go over and sit with him at times and help and visit but Janine and Kyle were his primary care givers. I am so thankful for all they did to keep my dad at home. He never wanted to go into a nursing home. They made sure that never happened." - Submitted by Candy Owens At the end of twelve months the review committee will select the Caregiver of the Year to be revealed at the Annual Luncheon.

Caregivers come in so many forms and the love, time, and caring given by our most recent winner will touch your heart. Congratulations to Durann Taylor for Caregiver of the Month from all of us at Family Legacy! "My mom adopted me out of foster care when I was 13. The road that she has been on trying to help me I couldn't go on myself. My husband and I are disabled and my mom has taken care of us both for almost 9 years now. I've always looked for a special way to thank her but I come up empty handed. My mom has bent over backwards for us and my children. My mom has cared so much for us that she hasn't bought anything for herself in years. She truly is inspirational. She makes sure we have food on the table and that we live comfortably. Like I said I just want a special way to thank her because if it weren't for her I honestly don't know where I would be! I would also like to thank her for not giving up on me."
We are so appreciative that a family we were able to service took the time to express their thankfulness to the amazing caregiver that helped with their loved one. Please read the beautiful story below and then join me in congratulating Lovell of Willowbrook Hospice as our Caregiver of the Month! We are nominating for caregiver of the month because she did an excellent job taking care of our dad. No MATTER what her work schedule was, if we needed her, she was there!! Our dad would ONLY do what We said only if Bre said ok. She spent time with him. She NEVER rushed through her visit with him. Our dad loved Bre, he couldn't wait for her to come to visit. We as a family think Bre should be caregiver of the month because she loved our dad like he was a family member, not a patient.

The Caregiver of the Month for June 2017, gives in so many ways through her company called "Saving Grace". But as you will see in this write-up, Sheri Johnson has a truly caring side that goes far beyond her job. Family Legacy is so proud to share her story and recognize her with this honor! "I am convinced that "God" put everything under the "Heavens" in charge of Angels to care for either those seen or unseen! Assuredly also he put humans with the hearts of Angels to care for us or for us to care for! This I must express from my Godly heart that my caregiver Sheri Johnson is one of those humans with the heart of an Angel put here by our God, Jesus Christ, but to care for me not only as an occupation but that his will be done. She is willing without complaint, caring and truly efficient, understanding, respectful and goes beyond what is required for her clients. What more could one ask for in an angel, caregiver or friend in Christ?" Submitted by Doris H.

May has been a beautiful month and allowed us at Family Legacy to discover another amazing caregiver from the Hearth at Hendersonville, Tommy Brown. You will see in the story from the loving family we were honored to serve and what they had to say about Tommy. We are nominating Tommy Brown, a nurse at the Hearth at Hendersonville, because he is a true compassionate and warm-hearted caregiver. He is professional and yet has a sympathetic attitude which affords a personal connection with the patients. We feel he went a step ahead and made that personal connection with our mom and she trusted him and looked forward to his timed treatment visits. She found a kindred spirit in him as he is just as much a good natured individual as she was. He seemed to brighten her day.
April may bring showers and flowers with it, but this year we at Family Legacy get to bring you the story of a wonderful caregiver, Lori Kaczmarek of Hearth at Hendersonville. We were honored to take care of a family and their loved one and they shared the story of Lori's care with us: Nominated by: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nicolosi We would like to nominate Lori Kaczmarek, a nurse at the Hearth at Hendersonville, for the outstanding professional and attentive care that she showed our mom during her time as a resident there. She was always compassionate and attentive to us as well. She made us feel confident that mom was getting the best possible care. We feel we made that personal connection with Lori and it made us feel that Mom was safe and being well taken care of. The Caregiver of the Year will win a 3-night trip to Florida, $200 spending money and an engraved gift and plaque. Do you know a Caregiver? Nominate them today!

Our Caregiver of the Month: Renalla Rucker

It is such a pleasure to announce our February Caregiver of the Month for 2017, Renalla Rucker of Adoration Home Health & Hospice. She was recognized by her coworkers and the families she helps as you will see in her story. I would like to nominate Renalla Rucker for employee of the month. Renalla is not only thorough with her job as a hospice aide (bathing, showering, dressing patients), but she is also known by patients and family members as a gentle and loving caregiver. Renalla goes beyond this care, though. She is observant, reporting changes to the CM/SN whenever necessary. She has reported rashes that needed immediate care. She is the one who, while showering her and dressing her, found and reported a bedsore on a patient's buttocks (until this time, the patient was normally OOB in her chair when SN made visits). Renalla is the one who called the SN when a patient was found, with little warning, to be transitioning. Because of her call, the SN was able to make an immediate SOAP visit to evaluate that patient, contact family of the sudden change and decline, and prepare them for the patient's death that occurred later than night. I have worked and observed Renalla as she provided care for our patients. I have heard compliments from family members, patients, and facility staff regarding her. And I have been able to make quick decisions based on her observations. Renalla is truly a valuable part of the hospice team, and I am privileged to work with her. Submitted by Vivian Cate CM/RN At the end of twelve months the review committee will select the Caregiver of the Year to be revealed at the Annual Luncheon. The Caregiver of the Year will win a 3-night trip to Florida, $200 spending money and an engraved gift and plaque. Do you know a Caregiver? Nominate them today!

Congratulations to our first Caregiver of the Month for 2017, Patricia Averitt! As you will read, caregiving is truly a beautiful act of kindness, whether it is your chosen career or simply the call to care for another person in need. "Patricia cared for my mom for two years before my mom passed away. She gave up a lot of time doing things with her kids and grandkids just so she could keep my mom comfortable. She paid her bills, fed her, changed diapers and even gave her the meds she needed. She was always supportive of my mom. She is an angel from God to not only put up with my mom but she kept me going too! After all I should know, I have been married to her going on 37 years." - Submitted by Roy Averitt At the end of twelve months the review committee will select the Caregiver of the Year to be revealed at the Annual Luncheon.

Family Legacy is happy to announce the last Caregiver of the month for 2016, Carol Patterson of Alive Hospice. As you read her story below, you will see that she is much more than just a nurse at hospice and why it was such an easy decision to honor her! "I would like to nominate Mrs. Carol Patterson, as the hardest working, caring, and most compassionate person I know. Carol has earned this recognition in so many ways based on my personal experience and observations. From my own experience, I had a major surgery and awoke to find Carol by my side. Many times I would tell her to get some sleep or go home but she only agreed to sleep when I slept and was there for me when I would wake up. As an observer, I have witnessed her hard work for others as a hospice worker, a nurse and even a caregiver for the little ones in the nursery at church. Carol Patterson deserves this honor as she is a caregiver in every sense of the word." Submitted by Mary Harris At the end of twelve months the review committee will select the Caregiver of the Year to be revealed at the Annual Luncheon.
We are so happy that another family took the time to tell us about a special caregiver who demonstrates the qualities of true compassion. Congratulations to Amber Woodward of Caris Hospice in Dickson for being our Caregiver of the Month! Amber is a very caring person. She took a special interest in caring for my mother. She took time to listen to my mother's stories and pamper her including doing her nails and hair. She also made sure she included my grandson on her visits. (He's 3 years old) I would just like to thank her in a very special way. - Nominated by Crystal McCutchen At the end of twelve months the review committee will select the Caregiver of the Year to be revealed at the Annual Luncheon.
Here at Family Legacy we are so excited to see the great nominations that have been coming in for wonderful caregivers like this month's winner, Cathy Taylor of Alive Hospice. Cathy's big heart is evident when you meet her and that is reflected by the words of the family that sent in her nomination. "When my husband entered into hospice, Cathy was not out first nurse. The other nurse was quitting and brought Cathy on her last day. From the very first time Cathy entered our home, she became a part of our family. My husband adored her and told everyone how awesome she was. She listened to us and talked with us and always took the extra time. She was very helpful and not only took exceptional care of my husband, she helped me to understand everything he was going through. I feel totally blessed that Cathy came into our lives."

Family Legacy is happy to announce our most recent Caregiver of the Month, Lisa Yates. As you will see in her nomination feedback, Lisa does more than the basic job description of a caregiver and we are pleased to honor her for her big, caring heart! My mom is a caregiver for At Home Health Care out of Clarksville. My mom's patients she cares for love her to death even to the point she's the only one that can care for them. If they call her she even goes and helps them off the clock. She has an 81 year old member with dementia and she hates for my mom to leave. My mom does more than is expected for her members. There are a lot of times she works seven days a week so she can make sure her members are cared for even when mom has things to do. She puts her members ahead of everything. She's cooked extra stuff at home just to carry her members home cooked meals. She spends her own money and buys them stuff all the time.

Family Legacy is so pleased to announce our Caregiver of the month award to a member of Caris Hospice who had been referred to as an "Angel". When you read the nomination it is easy to see why. Congratulations Sharon Robinson! Sharon is a RN Case Manager with Caris Healthcare. Many, many times we have received notes from families expressing their gratitude for Sharon's compassion and care. Over and over families have said, "Sharon was our Angel on Earth". Just recently we had a patient who had moved from home to an Assisted Living Facility. The move had been upsetting for her. The facility called saying the patient was very agitated and upset and requested a visit by the nurse. Sharon was sent to do a PRN visit and later when our Administrator followed up with the facility they praised Sharon. They said they had not seen a more compassionate and caring nurse. They stated when Sharon came for the visit the patient was still very agitated. Sharon sat down on the bed beside the patient, put her arm around her, told her everything was going to be OK, and quietly started singing a hymn to her. Before starting her second hymn, she asked the patient if she would like to lie down and rest. She continued with her singing and soon the patient was happy and resting comfortably. We are very fortunate at Caris to have our very own "Angel".
We at Family Legacy are proud to present the Caregiver of the Month Award to Rick Applegate of The Hearth at Hendersonville. It is easy to see through the words of his nomination and in meeting Rick that he has and is still touching so many lives with his big heart and caring ways. "Rick has worked in the activities department here at The Hearth at Hendersonville since February 2012. He has touched many lives through his kind and cordial ways, his attention to the needs of residents and families and his unique musical gifts. Rick frequently volunteers his time to sing at special events and funerals and has an established reputation as one of North Nashville's finest Elvis impersonators. He also leads a wonderful bible study for interested residents. In looking back at notes in our customer survey files from the past few years Rick's name is consistently mentioned. His humbleness, hard work and extra effort has made a difference in the lives of many people. He clearly goes far beyond the paid aspects of his job and gives back to others in many ways."
Our April Caregiver of the Month

Congratulations to our April 2016 Caregiver of the Month, Boyd Nash! We were so pleased to be able to present the April Caregiver of the Month Award to Mr. Boyd Nash. Judging by his humble reaction right away, it was easy to see that he is a man that gives in any way he can and cares for others without a second thought. Thank you for showing us such a great example of what truly caring for others can mean! "My nominee is Boyd Nash. He is my neighbor. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He came over to check on Butch every day. He would sit with him so I could go get groceries and get my hair cut and any other thing I needed to get out for. He would come over to pray with him and read the Bible. Butch really looked forward to his visits. His wife baked and sent Butch goodies. It would have been a lot harder without Boyd Nash." - Submitted by Esta Hickman Each monthly Caregiver Award winner will receive a gift card that can be used for whatever the recipient decides and a 3D crystal key ring. At the end of twelve months the review committee will select the Caregiver of the Year to be revealed at the Annual Luncheon. The Caregiver of the Year will win a 3-night trip to Florida, $200 spending money and an engraved gift and plaque. Do you know a Caregiver? Nominate them today!

Please join us in congratulating our March 2016 Caregiver of the Month, Tammy Bledsoe from Alive Hospice. We were able to surprise Tammy with this award and the reaction of her peers confirmed what an excellent example she is as a genuinely caring person and caregiver. Thank you for all you do Tammy! "Tammy went above and beyond at all times. We all called her Mustang Sally. She was always available for questions and concerns that we had. She was always able to put a smile on our faces. You don't find many nurses that will talk and treat the family like they were their own. Tammy was a blessing to our family." - Submitted by Patricia Martin Each monthly Caregiver Award winner will receive a gift card that can be used for whatever the recipient decides and a 3D crystal key ring.

Shawn Owen, Laurel Bowman, Mike Hamilton We are happy to announce our Caregiver of the Month winner for February 2016. Mrs. Laurel Bowman of Guardian Hospice. She is such a great example of being a compassionate Caregiver and so much more! Laurel was nominated by Ron Bottomley and he wrote: "Laurel is Executive Director of Guardian Hospice in Nashville, she gives her time there. She is the President of VETLINX, a non-profit geared towards the care and benefit of America's Veterans, she gives her time there. She is the Service Officer for Vietnam Veterans of America and has processed hundreds of claims in the past few years, all of which were approved for benefit to the veteran, she gives her time there. As if that were not enough, Laurel is a wife and mother of a young daughter. Laurel spends much of her evenings and early morning hours filling out paperwork. Laurel is a giver from the get-go and always finds time for others before she looks for time for herself. She's attentive, a great listener and asks qualifying questions to complete any task. One of a kind for sure." Thank you for all you do, Laurel!! And be watching for the March and April winners to be announced shortly! Each monthly Caregiver Award winner will receive a gift card that can be used for whatever the recipient decides and a 3D crystal key ring.
4 Tips for Coping with Stress

4 Tips for Coping with Stress The month of February calls for awareness about heart health and heart disease. Managing stress in your life is good for your heart and for your emotional well-being. The American Heart Association notes that "stress may affect behaviors and factors that increase heart disease risk." Here are 4 tips that can be a good start to coping with and reducing your stress. 1) Take care of yourself. This is easy to overlook, our lives are busy and we don't always take the time to slow down and get the rest we need. Try eating healthy, well balanced meals and try exercising on a regular basis. 2) Take a break. This could be as simple as sitting quietly for 5 or 10 minutes. Turn off the news, step away from electronics and take some time to slow down and relax. Try listening to some quiet classical music which can be an effective stress management tool. 3) Do one thing each day that you enjoy. This could be as simple as taking 15 minutes to find enjoyment in a hobby, art project or reading a book. Call a friend or make plans to meet for lunch. 4) Talk to someone about your stress. Let it out, this can help put your stress into perspective and is a way to receive feedback and advice from loved ones in your life.

4 Tips For Dealing with Grief During the Holiday Season

We realize the holidays are a particularly difficult time for anyone who has lost a loved one. Here are some grief support tips: Express Your Grief - The number one way you can ease your burden during this difficult time is to discuss your feelings of grief with others. This is an easy first step to recovery. Do not lock away your feelings-they will only grow. Know Your Limits - You will naturally feel "down" both physically and emotionally during this time. Don't feel obligated to get back to your normal routine. Learn to say no when you need more time. Rely on Fond Memories - The holidays are certain to bring memories of your loved one rushing back to you. Some will make you happy, others will make you sad. It's not only okay but necessary to experience both of these emotions. Lean on Your Spirituality - If you consider yourself faithful or spiritual, the holidays are probably a significant time for you. Lean on the comfort of your spirituality and use this time to reflect and grow.

Designating a Legacy Contact: Facebook

Facebook announced recently that it will allow you to designate a friend or family member to be your Facebook estate executor and manage your account after your death. The person is designated as your "Legacy Contact" and is someone you choose to look after your account when it's memorialized. Once your account is memorialized, your legacy contact will have the option to do things like: Write a pinned post for your profile (ex: to share a final message on your behalf or provide information about a memorial service) Respond to new friend requests (ex: old friends or family members who weren't yet on Facebook) Update your profile picture and cover photo A Legacy Contact can not access your account, until it is memorialized. How to designate a Legacy Contact: On the right side of your Facebook page, click on the downward-facing arrow to show the drop-down menu. Click on "Settings." Choose "Security," then "Legacy Contact" at the bottom of the page. Choose your Legacy Contact from your friends list. Choose the options you want your Legacy Contact to have. The system will offer an option to send a message to that person. For more information visit Facebook's Help Section.
