Brentwood, TN – Karl Benjamin Schnelle, Jr. passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at the age of 88. He was a Professor of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University, author of numerous books, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, mentor, humorist and story-teller. He received his BS, MS, and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and was passionate about higher education. Professor Schnelle was elected to the highest honor of Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering. He was a train enthusiast and loved to travel. He relished his time and companionship with his devoted caregivers. He truly loved his family, grandchildren, and his extended family, Partha and Anita Dey and their children Monica and Robin. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Mary Dabney Schnelle, his sister-in-law Martha Dabney (Wayne) Smith, his son Karl (Margie) Schnelle, his daughter Kathryn (Chris) Robertson, and his 5 grandchildren, James (Ruth) Robertson, Michael Robertson, Sarah Robertson, Kate Robertson, and John Robertson.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at Vanderbilt University, PMB 407727, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37235.

Visitation is on Friday, November 15, 2019, at 12 noon at the Cheek House followed by the service at 1 PM in Stanford Chapel, First Presbyterian Church of Nashville, 4815 Franklin Rd., Nashville, TN 37220.

    Dear Karl and Margie,

    We are so sorry for the loss of your dad. My family will be praying for your family. Hope you find comfort in reflecting on the wonderful memories you have with your dad. Undoubtedly you inherited his aptitude and love for the sciences and learning. This is certainly a legacy you carry out that honors him and made him very proud.

    Dear Karl and Family,

    I am so sorry and send you my heartfelt condolescence.
    My Mum passed away last year, after being sick for long time, so I know exactly how it feels to lose a beloved person.
    With tears I wish you all the power and strength you will need to overcome these difficult times of grievance for you and your family.

    Karen and I are sorry to learn of Karl’s death. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Karl and I crossed paths several times over the years and what I remember most about him was his great sense of humor and positive outlook. Although we were not together often, I will miss him.

    Dear Kathryn and family,

    I just heard about Karl and no words could express my heartfelt sympathy for you and your family. I have known you and Karl for a long time dating back to the seventies. I always enjoyed seeing you both at the University Club at Vanderbilt as well as church. So many great memories.

    May God continue to bless you and your family. Heaven has a new angel and know that he still will always be with you.
