Sonya was an active and faithful member of Charlotte Road Baptist Church. She loved assisting with the Children’s Sunday School Classes throughout the years. Friday nights, she could be found bowling with her father and the church bowling league. She graduated from Baily School (Special Education) at the age of 21, in 1982. Sonya worked as a volunteer at Metro General Hospital where her mother worked for over 50 years. She even had her own street named after her off of Old Hickory Blvd in Bellevue. She was loved by so many, including several of her father’s previous church congregation members. Sonya will be remembered also for singing “He Touched Me” as a blessing to so many.

Out of an abundance of caution, a private family graveside service will be held at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Joe Frejosky officiating. The family is planning a public Celebration of Sonya’s life for the near future. Please visit for updates.

I was blessed to know Sonya for 50 of her 58 years; she was a blessing to all who knew her! The last time we were together she wanted to know when we would go out to eat together with family. I told her it would have to be “next time;” looks like “next time” will be the Marriage Supper of the Lamb – with ALL of the family of God!

Miss Sonya was such a blessing to my family. She faithfully taught my children’s Sunday school class. She called my grandparents her adopted grandparents, and my husband her adopted brother. We had a lot of fun together. She had the most beautiful smile and heart. Every time I hear the song He touched me, I can hear her singing it in my mind. She loved Jesus so much, and I know she is enjoying spending time with Him and Brother Joe. ❤️

  11. Peggy Stevens says:

She’s in Heaven with her Aunt Carolyn now. Carolyn would often tell me things that Sonya had said or done. I first met her when she was little and wanted to ride the school bus. On our last day that year Carolyn brought her to ride our school bus. Sonya had the biggest smile on her face. Every time I pass Sonya Drive I think about her. Now I will think about her in Heaven singing.

It is with a sad heart that I write this sympathy note. I have never forgotten Sonya, especially when she sang ” He Touched Me” It was as if an angel were singing. So beautiful. She was a loving and very friendly angel. God has opened his arms for her. I extend my love to Ms. Joan Estes and Joseph.

A special little Angel. She will definitely be missed at CRBC. I loved her. She always had a special hug for everyone. I will never forget her singing, He Touched Me with Joe. It blessed the whole church. What a reunion they are having in Heaven. Her daddy and all the family that are already there. I know she’ll be glad to get to see Trent and Delores Winstead also.
