William Newell Tinker, age 89, passed away on July 12th, 2014. Bill was born June 9, 1925 in Dekalb County, Alabama to the late John Jack and Mattie Alma Tinker. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army 99th Division. He married Doris Lay on July 31, 1954. They began their married life in Southern California and moved in 1965 to Huntsville, Alabama where Bill worked in the space industry. The family later relocated to Smyrna, Tennessee where Bill was employed by AVCO (Textron). Retirement followed in 1989 when the couple relocated to Crossville, Tennessee. Retirement was joyous, allowing deep engagement with Central Baptist Church, the Lyons Club, and the discovery of a love for furniture refinishing.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Doris Tinker and by four children: Nancy Tinker (Bob Pace) of Charleston, South Carolina; John Tinker of Lutz, Florida; Cindy Tinker of Nashville, Tennessee; and Rob Tinker (Katherine Pierre) of Santa Clara, California. Bill had four grandchildren whom he loved deeply. He is survived by Jack, Miles, and Catherine Tinker of Lutz, Florida. He was predeceased by grandson Michael Barnes.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Alive Hospice, Nashville, Tennessee and Child Evangelism Fellowship of Middle Tennessee.

Visitation will be conducted Tuesday morning, July 15th at 10:00 am at West Harpeth Funeral Home, 6962 Charlotte Pike, Nashville, Tennessee, 37209. A celebration of life will follow at 11:30 with interment scheduled for 1:00 pm at Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 7931 McCrory Lane, Nashville.

    Nancy, John, Cindy and Rob,
John Jones told us today, Labor Day at Horton Haven Christian Camp, of the passing of your father, Bill. It was a sorrow to hear, but we know he is rejoicing with the Lord.

It was our joy to know Bill and Doris when we lived in Smyrna and afterwards when we moved to Murfreesboro. I am sorry to be out of touch in the latter days of their life, but I thank the Lord for the friendship we enjoyed for years. We appreciated and enjoyed the quiet smiling man who had a gentle laugh and made us welcome in his home. We visited in Smyrna and in Crossville and were welcomed each place. We respected him and appreciated his love for the Lord and stand for Christian principles and involvement in winning others to the Savior.

I know you have a legacy you treasure, and I want you to know you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
    Judy Trent
