Elin Macdonald Gordon

Elin Macdonald Gordon passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, in Nashville, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on July 15, 1947, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, and moved in her teens to Hollywood, FL.  Elin lived a life defined by curiosity, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to the people she loved.

After earning her bachelor's degree from Florida State University and her master's degree from the University of North Carolina, she made Nashville her home and began a teaching career that spanned nearly 40 years with Williamson County Schools. Her classroom was more than a place to learn—it was a sanctuary where students felt welcomed, encouraged, and believed in. Her infectious smile, quick wit, and genuine compassion made her a favorite teacher to countless middle school students during some of the most challenging years of their lives. For many, she became much more than a teacher; she was a trusted confidante, an encourager, and someone who always made them feel seen.

Elin was selfless, compassionate, and kind. She was always looking for ways to make someone laugh or brighten their day, and never missed a birthday or event without a call or a card. To her family, she was a constant source of calm understanding.  She truly believed and often quoted, "Everything will be fine in the end. If it's not fine, it's not the end." Her advice was grounded in wisdom and empathy, her arms were always open for a hug, and her love was unconditional.

Elin loved music and never missed a chance to dance.  She famously played the same mix CD in her classroom for years during tests or other quiet study times. She introduced countless middle schoolers to Bob Seger, The Beatles, and even Phish. Whether at a celebration or simply gathered with family and friends, she had a way of turning ordinary moments into joyful ones. She was the life of the party.

She was endlessly curious about the world around her. She loved traveling, history, art, and discovering new people and places. No matter where she went, she made lasting friendships and came home with stories to tell. And despite proudly claiming to have the world's worst sense of direction, she insisted she was never lost—just"exploring."

Elin is reunited in peace with her beloved parents, John and Freda Gordon; her dear sister, Shirley Gordon; and so many family members and friends who went before her.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Alison Atwood; her son, Seth Redelheim; her son-in-law, Justin Atwood; her daughter-in-law, Nicole Redelheim; her cherished grandsons, Samuel and Jacob Redelheim; her sister, Dorthea Rosof; her brother, John Gordon and sister-in-law Shelly Gordon; and all of her beloved nieces and nephews: Julie, Diana, Erik, Marnie, Bob, Reagan, and Andy; and many extended family members, lifelong friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives were made better by knowing her.

While our hearts are broken, we are so incredibly grateful for the life she lived and the countless lives she touched. Elin had a rare gift for making people feel comfortable from the moment they met her. She was quick with a smile, generous with a hug, and always knew how to find humor, even in life's most difficult moments. She celebrated our successes, carried our burdens as if they were her own, and loved without second thought. Her kindness, adventurous spirit, and ability to find joy wherever life led her will remain one of the many gifts she leaves behind.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Elin's life on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Maggiano's Little Italy in Nashville. We hope you'll join us to share stories, laughter, and memories of a remarkable woman who made the world brighter simply by being herself.
