John Preston Hulan, fondly known as "The Boat Man," passed away on September 21, 2023, at the age of 82. Born on October 24, 1940, in Nashville, Tennessee.
John's career as a boat mechanic took him to great heights as he established his own company; West Nashville Marine. With his exceptional skills and unwavering commitment to excellence, he became a trusted figure in the boating community. The countless boats he repaired and restored were testimonies to his craftsmanship and love for his craft.
Before embarking on his successful career as a boat mechanic, John attended airplane mechanic school where he honed his technical abilities. This foundation allowed him to apply his expertise to various aspects of mechanical engineering.
Aside from his professional accomplishments, John prioritized the importance of family and always found joy in spending time with loved ones. He cherished the moments spent out on the lake fishing with his family and friends, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and camaraderie. Sharing delicious meals together was another favorite pastime that bonded them even closer.
John's military service played a significant role in shaping the man he became. He proudly served the United States Air Force for eight years, demonstrating courage, loyalty, and dedication to protecting his country. His service will be forever honored and remembered by all those he leaves behind.
In reminiscing about John's life, it is impossible not to mention the deep sense of love he felt for his family. He is survived by his loving children Denise (Kevin) Bennett, Donald Waldrop, Richard Alan (Marilyn) Hulan, Michelle "Punkin" Holt, Todd (Adrienne) Hulan; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his sister Patsy Hulan-Davids. Although the pain of his loss is immeasurable, their lives are forever touched by the love and guidance he bestowed upon them.
John also leaves behind cherished memories within the hearts of his deceased family and friends, including his wife of 41 years, Jacquelyn Hulan; parents, William P. and Frances Hulan; his brother Bill Hulan; and granddaughter Lacie Waldrop.
To honor John's life, visitation services will take place at West Harpeth Funeral Home in Nashville on September 26, 2023. The first visitation is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., allowing friends and loved ones to share memories and find solace together. The second visitation will be held on September 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Following the visitations, a funeral service will commence at West Harpeth Funeral Home on September 27 at 12:30 p.m., providing an occasion for all who knew John to pay their last respects and celebrate his life. Finally, John will be laid to rest in a burial ceremony at Middle TN Veterans Cemetery on September 27 at 2:00 p.m.
John Preston Hulan, "The Boat Man," was a remarkable individual whose presence graced the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His dedication to his craft, love for family, and commitment to excellence will continue to inspire and guide us as we carry his memory in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's name to the VFW Post 1970.
