John Robert “Bob” Spahn went to be with the Lord on May 19, 2025 at the age of 72 years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Robert and Victory “Vicki” Glynn Spahn and his half-sisters Susan Spahn Petreshene and Mary Jo Spahn Robbins.
Bob was born on July 23, 1952 in Park Forest, IL. He was a proud brother to his siblings, Betty, Tom and Rick Spahn. He attended Rich East High School where he excelled academically, played football, and was a member of the concert and marching bands and choir. He graduated with honors from the University of Illinois with a major in Finance. In college, he was a member of the Varsity Men’s Glee Club, the acapella group ‘The Other Guys’, and a trumpeter in the Marching Illini Band.
Bob led a successful career in various locations and in 1985, he moved his growing family to Dalton, GA to spearhead a new endeavor with Shaw Industries. He was a visionary leader and foundational force behind Shaw Contract, helping shape its early direction and success in the commercial market. Known for his big personality, creativity, and genuine joy in connecting with others, Bob left a lasting impact on colleagues, clients, and the brand he helped build—one that is now celebrating 40 years as the industry leader.
With a charitable heart, Bob dedicated himself over the years to serving others through his involvement with United Way, Friendship House, Leadership Dalton and ChristChurchPresbyterian. He was especially proud to support his wife, Phyllis, in establishing and leading The Rapha House Counseling Ministry. After retirement, Bob and Phyllis moved to Nashville, TN in 2020 to be near family. He invested time and energy in supporting Freedom’s Promise in their mission to prevent human trafficking and child exploitation.
Whether playing golf, pickleball or chess, Bob reflected the love of Jesus Christ in his every interaction, making those around him feel valued and seen. His generous spirit and steadfast encouragement uplifted all who crossed his path. Above all else, Bob considered his greatest accomplishment to be his family. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Phyllis; his four daughters, Tiffany, Courtney, Jenna and Taylor –lovingly nicknamed ‘The Spahnettes’; Jill whom he cherished like a daughter and his three sons-in-law, Jeb, Brennan and Philip. Bob was better known as ‘Boppy’ to eight grandchildren and counting: Ella, Neely, Ryn, Robert Campbell, Norah, Haddie, PK, and Eli. He will be forever loved and deeply missed by his family and others who knew him. His life was lived fully with a sincere devotion to and love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A Celebration of Life for Bob will be held at ChristChurch in Dalton, GA on Tuesday, June 3. Visitation will be 10-11 AM EST with a service to follow at 11 AM EST.
