Rita Kay Johnson, née Edwards, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and beloved member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ community, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee. Born in Bedford, Indiana, on October 15, 1944, Rita’s life was marked by dedication, love, and quiet generosity that left an indelible impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Rita left her hometown of Carlisle, IN to pursue her higher education at Lipscomb University, where she met her husband of 59 years and her best friends, Nona & Janice. Her professional journey began as a teacher and later served as an administrative assistant with SVMIC, where her efficiency and kindness made her a valued colleague until her retirement.
Beyond her career, Rita was known for her gentle and thoughtful nature, considering others with a kindness that was unassuming yet profoundly felt. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, savoring a cup of tea, spending cherished moments with friends and family, and engaging in the art of card-making. She took particular delight in sending thoughtful notes to those who were on her mind.
Rita and her husband raised two wonderful sons, who, along with their wives have been a source of immense pride and joy. Rita loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren and the grand-dogs that brought extra warmth and vibrancy to their lives.
She was a gift to family, friends, and neighbors alike, touching many lives with her steady presence and thoughtful ways. Rita’s legacy is one of quiet strength, a testament to a life well-lived and deeply loved.
Rita is remembered with love by her husband, Robert; her sons, Bobby and Brian; her daughters-in-law, Shannon and Ruthie; her grandchildren, Annika, Gregor, and Kylie; her brother, Fred Edwards; and sisters-in-law, Karen Edwards and Sara Johnson.
As we honor Rita Kay Johnson’s memory, we celebrate a remarkable woman who enriched our lives in countless ways and whose absence leaves a void that will be sorely felt. Her thoughtful spirit and enduring love will continue to inspire all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to World Christian Broadcasting. www.worldchristian.org/giving-1
