Our Caregiver of the Month: Kim Mullins

Dec 22, 2016
We at Family Legacy are so moved by the stories of Caregivers that are making a difference in so many lives. We were able to deliver some Christmas cheer to Kim Mullins of Guardian Hospice and the story below explains just why: Kim, MSW is an extraordinary social worker with Guardian Hospice. She has always gone above and beyond showing genuine care and concern for our patients, their families and her team members at Guardian. There really is nothing Kim wouldn't do to help her patients and their families. She never hesitates to help out when called upon. As an advocate for both patient and family, she has even gone the extra mile to help distressed patients find new placement when they are no longer able to stay in their own home. She is always stepping in to educate patients and families with insurance needs, power of attorney for healthcare/ healthcare surrogates, and funeral planning. She provides emotional support assisting our patients and families as they cope with a very difficult time in their lives. She is a strong advocate for our Veteran patients and families helping them to obtain any benefits they may qualify for through their years of military service. She is always willing to meet the needs of the patients from informational visits about hospice care after hours to sitting with families to offer support after the patient's death waiting for the funeral home to arrive. It is not uncommon for Kim to go above and beyond the expectations of her role as a social worker in hospice. She has helped patients find a home for their pets. Kim has assisted patients and their families in so many ways from cleaning their homes, obtaining basic needs like clothing and toiletries, arranging for them to have food for the holidays, ensuring they have an air conditioner during the hot summer months, to setting up patient with Lifeline to ensure their safety and well-being. Throughout the years, she has come to the rescue of many patients by using her own finances to purchase needed clothing, washcloths and towels for them. Kim believes in the hospice philosophy and exhibits the qualities of a compassionate servant to the patients and families Guardian serves. This is evident in her 10+ years of service with Guardian Hospice. She is well- respected by her team and is an incredible resource to all Guardian employees of every discipline. Kim is a valued asset to the Guardian Hospice team with her knowledge of end-of-life care, heart willing and giving spirit, and her overwhelming servant's heart.
